The Third Announcement

Israeli-Polish Mathematical Meeting, is a joint initiative of the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM) and the Israel Mathematical Union (IMU). Mathematicians from other countries are also cordially invited to participate.
The meeting will be hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Łódź (UŁ). Its program will cover many topics pertaining to mathematical research conducted in Israel and Poland. The Meeting will consist of plenary lectures, thematic sections and other informal scientific discussions and social activities as well.
The Meeting will start in the morning of Monday September 12, 2011 and end in the afternoon of Thursday September 15, 2011.

1. Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony starts on Monday September 12 at 9:30 am in Aula A of the Faculty of Management, Matejki 22/26, Łódź (next to the Faculty of Mathematics).

During the ceremony prizes of the Polish Mathematical Society will be presented to the winners:

  • Stefan Banach Prize,
  • Samuel Dickstein Prize,
  • PTM Prize for young mathematicians,
  • Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize (joint with the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Acadamy of Sciences),
  • The International Stefan Banach Prize for a Doctoral Dissertation in Mathematical Sciences (joint with Ericpol Telecom).
The presence of local and university athorities is expected.

2. Scientific program

  • 11:00 - 12:00 Gady Kozma (The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel), Harmonic functions of minimal growth
  • 12:00 - 13:00 Adam Paszkiewicz ((University of Łódź, Poland, the winner of the Main Prize of PTM (Nagroda im. Stefana Banacha)), On almost sure convergence, divergence and continuity

3. Meeting venue

The conference venue is located at the building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Łódź, ul. Banacha 22.
Registration desk
The Meeting Office is located at the room D 102 in the building of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, ul. Banacha 22. The office is open
        on Sunday, September 11, from 4 to 8 pm
        on Monday - Thursday, September 12 - 15, from 8 am to 6 pm
Lecture hall
The openning ceremony and plenary lecture will take place at Aula A of the Faculty of Managment of the University of Łódź (Łódź, ul. Matejki 22/26). Its capacity is over 400 places. Full audio and video equipment is available. The role of the blackboards (which are present but too small for such audience) plays a digital camera which projects hand writing as well as slides. The section lectures will take place in the rooms of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Blackboards and projectors are available.
Computer room
The computer room C 208 wil be devoted only for participants of the conference. There are Windows machines with internet connection. It is possible to connect your own laptop. There is a wifi network available at designated places of the building (Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science).

4. Travel

Arriving by plane via Warsaw Airport
If you arrive by plane to the Warsaw-Airport WAW (The Warsaw Fryderyk Chopin International Airport), to reach the railway station Warszawa Centralna you may find bus number 175 (tickets available in vending machine) which departs from the front of the arrival hall and go to the railway station Warszawa Centralna (bus stop Dw. Centralny 01, on the left you can find Dworzec Centralny, on the right green skyscraper Mariot Hotel). The route takes about 30 minutes and depends on traffic. From there many trains go to Łódź Fabryczna railway station. To reach the railway station use an underground pass (direction north).
The schedule of train departures to Łódź should be available at the webpage of Polish Railways. The route takes approximately 2 hours and costs ca. 40 PLN. Current timetable for this connection (sundays) is: 6:19, 7:06, 8:58, 10:22, 12:40, 13:01, 15:07, 15:20, 16:03, 16:50, 17:52, 18:24, 18:57, 19:54, 20:21, 21:15. More information on train timetable will be available at the webpage of the Meeting in the fold Travel.
The tickets for the train are avilable in the main hall of the Dworzec Centralny or in the train (with some additional charge).
After departing at Łódź Fabryczna railway station to reach
  • the Meeting venue, University hotel, University dormitories go north across a small park and find tram stop Narutowicza POW. From there use any train (i.e. 7,9,12,13) to the stop Narutowicza - Kopcińskiego (in case of dormitories only 12 to the stop Pomorska - Konstytucyjna),
  • Hotel Grand - walk west (500 m),
  • Hotel Ambasador find on the north side the bus stop Dworzec Łódź Fabryczna and use the bus 70,
  • Hotel Ibis find the tram stop Kilińskiego - Dworzec Łódź Fabryczna (west to the station) and use any tram (i.e. 1,4,5) going south up to the stop Kilińskiego-Piłsudskiego.

Arriving by plane via Łódź Airport
If you arrive to Łódź Airport (LCJ) then you can take taxi (in front of terminal 2) or a bus number 65, direction Świtezianki, (in front of terminal 1, aprox. 300 m, bus stop Pienista Lotnisko). Get off the bus at Żeromskiego-plac Barlickiego and change to tram 9, direction Augustów, or 13, direction Śląska, (stop Zielona-Żeromskiego) to get off at
  • stop Zielona-Kościuszki and change to any tram going south if you are getting to Ibis Hotel, get off at stop Kościuszki-Mickiewicza
  • stop Zielona-Piotrkowska and walk to Grand Hotel
  • stop Narutowicza-Kopcińskiego and walk to the University Hotel or Meeting venue
  • stop Narutowicza-Kopcińskiego and change to tram 12, direction Stoki, if you are going to University Dormitories (stop Pomorska-Konstytucyjna). Any of this routes should not exceed 30 minutes.

Arriving by train or bus
At the railway station Łódź Kaliska you can find a tram stop Bandurskiego - Dworzec Łódź Kaliska. The tram 12, direction Stoki, joins the railway station directly with the Meeting venue and many of offered accomodations. The railway station Łódź-Widzew is connected by train with the railway station Łódź-Fabryczna. The central bus station is at the front of the railway station Łódź-Fabryczna.
Arriving by car
At the conference venue there are many free of charge parking places. About parking in the hotels, contact their offices.

5. Local transport in Łódź

Public transport
In the Łódź public transport system (MPK) time tickets are used. They can be bought at kiosks - newspaper shops. The Polish name for a ticket is bilet. 1,70 PLN ticket is for routes up to 10 minutes, up to 30 minutes route 2,40 PLN, up to 60 min 3,60 PLN, up to 120 min at 4,80 PLN. You have to punch a ticket at the tram/bus. Last four digits of puncher printout indicate a time of starting a journey. Detailed timetable and tracks are available at the webpage of MPK-Łódź. The standard price for a taxi should be 6 PLN for the first kilometer and 2.20 PLN for every next one (3.30 at nights). Some taxi drivers have their own prices and it will be better to ask them for the cost before using a taxi. 7. Social events

The banquet will be organized in the halls of the Museum of City Łódź, Ogrodowa 15, (former Izrael Poznański Palace) on Wednesday, September 14. It will begin at 8 pm and and finish about 11 pm. During the banquet, the string quartet Kwartet Mezzo will provide live music. There also be a possibility to see abundant collections of the Museum of City Łódź.

Sightseeing and accompanying persons program
  • Footsteps of the Jews in Łódź (including Jewish Cemetery),
  • Łódź in nineteenth century,
  • Łódź of movies,
  • Green lungs of Łódź,
  • Churches of five rites.
An additional cultural program for accompanying persons program will be offered.

8. Eating

For those participants who chose accomodation without breakfast we could organize this meal at the cafeteria of the Faculty of Management.
Lunches are provided by the organizers after plenary lectures session in the main hall of the Faculty of Management of the University of Łódź (Łódź, ul. Matejki 22/24).
All the life of Łódź is concentrated along the main street Piotrkowska. It is easily reached from the hotel by tram lines 12 (stop on Narutowicza st.) and 9, 13 (stop on Kopciskiego st., see the Google maps). About 10 minutes (4 stops) route ends at the stop Zielona/Zachodnia. We suggest trying on your own (check here).

9. Other useful information

In Poland there is a continental European power voltage/frequency 230V/50Hz.
Polish currency - złoty (PLN). You can exchange money at banks or in the exchange offices (kantor) which offer usually better rate. Credit cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants. Cash machines are densily located.
